GARLOCK SEALING TECHNOLOGIES WINS TECHNOLOGY AWARD
The readers of Industrial Maintenance & Plant Operation (IMPO) magazine have selected Garlock
Sealing Technologies’ flange-free, anti-stick gasket coating for the publication’s first annual
“Top15 IMPOvation” product technology award. Featured in the September issue, winners of
the award were chosen from a field of 100 nominees.
IMPO’s coverage of the awards cited a maintenance engineer with a major chemical
processor who said of the product, “My guys hate scraping gaskets. A little piece of
something always gets stuck on the surface under the new gasket. This new technology allows
us to save manpower and create a stronger seal.”

MARKET FOCUS: INDUSTRIAL VALVES
Each month the Valve Manufacturers Association polls its members on the effect of economic
conditions on their businesses. Here is a snapshot of what members (who make valves, actuators and controls) reported in VMA’s December
2009 poll:
Fewer reported a decrease in the amount of
shipments in December (compared to last year)
than in November, with 63% of manufacturers
(down from 80% in November) reporting
decreases.
Quarterly projections for manufacturers
have continued to level out with 31% projecting
volume to be the same as last year, down from
35% in November. The leveling effect is true for
the percentage of manufacturers who reported
that volume for the quarter would be below last
year with that percentage hovering between
55% and 56% for the past three months.
Manufacturers also noted a sharp decrease
in their estimate of business for 2009 as
opposed to 2008, with 88% expecting
decreases in December as opposed to 65%
in November.
Pessimism is still the prevailing theme; however, about 13% of members reported some
optimism about the future, the highest rate in
eight months.
