FOCUS: Pharmaceutical Applications
A New Type of Sanitary
Check Valve
One problem associated with sanitary check valves is
that most designs use an internal spring to assist in
closure. This internal spring is in the waterway and
can result in media entrapment and particle
generation.
PBM’s solution was to develop a sanitary check
valve that contained no internal springs, cracks,
crevices or other localized depressions that could
trap fluid. The design uses a TFM poppet that
requires crack pressures as low as 0.1 psi. The
valves are available in both vertical and horizontal
no-offset designs in a wide range of wrought
materials including 316L, AL6XN, Hastelloy C- 22
and C-276, and many other alloys. Sizes range from ½-inch through 4-inch, in
both sanitary clamp and extended weld stub designs to US tubing, DIN and ISO
dimensions.
These ultra-sanitary check valves are specifically designed for use in biotech
and pharmaceutical applications including WFI lines, back-flow prevention of
condensate, sampling systems, low pressure sterile steam and sterile filling lines.
All elastomer materials are FDA compliant. Visit PBM’s website for complete
information along with animations of the valves in action.

Intelligent Valve Manifold
The benefits of Foundation fieldbus can
now be realized in an integrated
modular pneumatic valve manifold
system. With two modes of operation,
the Asco Numatics FF valve manifold
can be used as a simple general purpose
FF I/O unit with attached valves and
discrete I/O modules; this mode allows control of 32 IN & 16 OUT. Moreover,
the valve diagnostic mode (valve monitoring system) allows simultaneous
controls of 8 VMS single- or double-acting actuators with a single FF node.
Integrated diagnostic capabilities include travel times, break times, lost
position, cycle counter and auto calibration. These are reported back to Delta V
and easily read via the AMS software’s built-in alarm functions.

Two- and Three-way Clean Service Control Valves
STERI-TROL S Series clean service control valves by Spirax Sarco are designed
for use in applications such as clean steam, pure steam, de-mineralized or
reverse osmosis water and sterilize-in-place/clean-in-place (SIP/CIP).
The two-port, pneumatically actuated design has a high performance, double
stem seal to protect it from particulate damage and ensure a long service life. A
three-port model is also available for mixing and diverting fluids. The S Series
is self-draining and crevice-free to promote cleanliness and eliminate potential
for contamination. The clamp body/bonnet connection allows for quick
inspection and easy in-line maintenance.
