Experts Gather to Address Water Issues

More than 1,000 water industry experts will speak or present
to more than 10,000 water industry professionals at ACE10,
the annual conference and exposition for the American Water
Works Association.
ShowMe The Water, which is June 20 to 24 at McCormick
Place, Chicago, will explore the future of safe water and cut-ting-edge research and best practices.
The show features speakers at hundreds of seminars and
presentations as well as workshops in 17 specialized tracks
that range from distribution and plant operations to international issues and legislative/regulatory challenges. The visitors
also come to learn about the latest products in the water world
from the more than 500 exhibiting companies who showcase
at the exposition.
Opening the conference on June 21 is speaker Denis Hayes,
the national coordinator for Earth Day, who has been a key
player in the environmental movement since its launch. Hayes
will address major environmental challenges such as global
warming, expanding renewable energy and protecting the
oceans. Mark Shannon, professor at University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, will keynote Monday’s proceedings.
Shannon is director of the Center of Advanced Materials for
Purification of Water with Systems and associate director of
the Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical
Manufacturing System. He will offer insight into advancing
nanoscale, microscale and mesoscale science and technologies
for addressing today’s real-world water problems.

Reliant Center when the Offshore
Technology Conference brings
together thousands of oil and gas
experts and professionals.
The conference is a scientific and
technical conference sponsored by 12
professional societies that represent every
aspect of the industry. Last year’s conference, which celebrated the event’s 40th anniversary, drew nearly 68,000 attendees
from more than 120 countries.
Attendees include engineers, executives, geoscientists and
academicians who choose among 300 technical presentations,
which are divided into technical, business and regulatory
issues. In addition to technical presentations, OTC offers panel
sessions where industry leaders discuss current challenges and
future directions.
Special events such as topical breakfasts and luncheons
cover broad trends. For example, Chris Ross, vice president,
CRA International will address new roles and responsibilities in the industry in a session on the shape of the industry
to come. John Hollowell, executive vice president, Deep
Water, Shell, will talk about opportunities and challenges
for deep water. Several speakers at the topical sessions will
discuss the state of oil and gas in regards to the world’s eco-

nomic recession. For example, Xizhao Jiang, CEO, China
Offshore Oil Engineering Company Ltd, will talk about
opportunities in offshore construction in China in light of
the recession.
