Gate valves make an appearance
again, most notably alongside fire
hydrants, allowing for the full force of
water needed to fight fires and then
total shut-off once the danger has
passed.
Other valves in the water system

Corporation valves are typically one-
shot valves that are buried and rarely
activated. Their primary purpose is to
allow the utility to install a new service
without shutting down a pipe, potential-
ly isolating and inconveniencing other
customers. A secondary purpose is
serving as a back-up or as insurance if
a curb valve doesn’t perform as needed.
