The Dog Days of Editorial Planning
17
Mention the word “August,” and
most people think of vacations at
the beach, golfing getaways or getting the
kids ready for school. Not me. Like many
editors I know, this last full month of
summer is all about planning editorial for
the following year. With most magazine
media kits and editorial calendars due
out in late September, we editors need to
get a jump on the planning process during
the hazy, lazy days of summer.

A Whole Lotta Help
At industry or professional events, people
will occasionally ask me, how do you figure out what to put in the magazine every
year? My quick answer is this: With a lot
of help! However, editorial planning is a
long process that involves gathering facts
and opinions by talking to people who
know more than I do, constantly reading
news about the industry, listening to comments at meetings, attending industry
trade shows, checking out websites to see
what piques everyone’s interest, and, yes,
I do rely a bit on my magical “
editorial-sense,” having spent the last five years
editing Valve Magazine.
I equate this process to being a chef
gathering ingredients and recipe ideas
from others who are either superb cooks
themselves or who just like to eat good
food! Those who contribute to the meal
are VMA members, end users, engineers,
distributors, industry consultants, other
media… just about anyone who has an
interest in what’s happening in today’s
ever-changing valve industry.
Since Valve Magazine is put out by the
Valve Manufacturers Association on
behalf of its members—U.S. and Canadian manufacturers of industrial valves,
actuators and controls, as well as suppliers to those companies—I count on members to provide ideas on issues, products
or technologies about which they would
like to write or read. I always get a lot of
ideas from industry volunteers who are
part of VMA’s Communications Committee, the magazine’s Editorial Review

And Then There is You
But no one’s opinions count more than
yours, the reader. So here’s your chance
to let us know what you’d like to see in
Valve Magazine next year.
• What are the industry issues that
give you the most concern?
• About what are you curious to
learn more?
• Do you like “back to basics” articles, those designed for the more
experienced reader or both?
• What sections of the magazine do
you find most useful?
• What was your favorite article in
the past year?
• What can we do to make Valve Magazine even more useful to you?
Do you want to market your products and
services to 27,000 users, buyers, specifiers,
distributors and manufacturers in the
industrial valve industry?
If you are a U.S. or Canadian valve, actuator
or control manufacturer, or if you sell services and supplies to valve, actuator and control
manufacturers, you could be eligible to
advertise in Valve Magazine.
To find out if you qualify, please contact Sue
Partyke at 540-374-9100 or via email at
Even if you just provide an idea for
one article you’d like to read, we’ll be
most grateful. Collectively, your comments about the magazine will help us
put together an appetizing publication for
you to feast on in 2009. VM
