Welcome
William Sandler, President, Valve
Manufacturers Association,
Washington, DC, and Greg Johnson,
Chairman, VMA Education & Training
Committee
8:10–9: 50 am Valves & Actuators 101 –
morning session
• Introduction & Multi-turn Valves: Greg Johnson,
President, United Valve, Houston, TX
• Quarter-turn Valves: Leon Brooks, Director
International Sales, Asia Pacific/Latin America –
Distributed Valves, Cameron Valves & Measurement,
Houston, TX
• Check Valves: Jeff Kane, Sales & Marketing Manager,
DFT Inc., Exton, PA
• Pressure Relief Valves: Dan Angelino, Director of
Sales, Farris Engineering (a div. of CWFC), Brecksville,
OH
We begin the session with a broad overview of the valve
industry and some of its rich history. Next, we move on to
detailed discussions of the major valve types, including
gate, globe, check, ball, plug, butterfly and pressure relief,
to give attendees valuable knowledge that can be applied
in their daily PVF work, whether in sales, as a specifying
engineer or an end-user.
9:50–10: 10 am
Coffee Break
10:10–11: 45 am
Valves & Actuators 101 (continued)
11: 45 am–1: 15 pm Lunch / Exhibits open
Valves, actuators, controls and other products used in the
flow control chain will be displayed in tabletop exhibits,
providing attendees with the opportunity to ask industry
manufacturers, suppliers, and valve service and repair
companies about the products and services they provide.
1:15–2: 45 pm Valves & Actuators 101 –
afternoon session
• Actuators: Ed Holtgraver, CEO, QTRCO, Inc., Tomball,
TX, and Paul Souza, Training Liaison, AUMA
Actuators, Inc., Canonsburg, PA
• Control Valves: Keith Chapman, Central Region
Manager, Samson Controls, Inc., Kansas City, KS
• Valve Performance & Components: Greg Johnson,
President, United Valve, Houston, TX
The lesson on Actuators presents the various actions, such
as linear, rotary, etc., that are used to operate the valve
types discussed in the morning lessons. The presenters will
describe the actuator types, such as electric, pneumatic,
hydraulic, etc., which provide these actions. The Actuator
lesson stops short of recommending the optimum actuator
selection for a user's application, but it does provide
sufficient information to enable users to be aware of their
options and to have a firm understanding of how each
actuator type may apply to their specific needs.
In our lesson on Control Valves, our presenter defines
control valves and explains what they do. Then, he
describes typical control valve components, including
variations and types. The discussion will briefly touch on
linear valves, actuators and positioners.
The final lesson—Valve Performance & Components—
examines important topics useful for anyone working in the
industries that make and use valves. This presentation
includes valve standards, basic piping information and
application issues that are critical to effective valve
specification and usage.
