Garlock Receives 2010 Environmental
Excellence Award
The seventh annual New York State Environ-
mental Excellence Awards ceremony took
place recently in Cooperstown as part of the
NYS Association of Reduction, Reuse and
Recycling Annual Conference. Garlock Sealing
Technologies of Palmyra, NY received the
award for voluntarily eliminating 100% of
toluene in its manufacturing of fiber sheet gas-
kets. By demonstrating the use of a non-tradi-
tional solvent to produce a viable product, the
company provided the industry with a new
benchmark for environmentally responsible
manufacturing practices.
Flowserve Earns ‘America’s Safest
Company’ Award
Flowserve Corporation has received a 2010
“America’s Safest Company” award from EHS
Today magazine. The honor was presented to
Flowserve at an awards ceremony in San
Diego last fall. As part of the award, Flowserve
was recognized for implementing rigorous
safety policies and practices in its global indus-
trial manufacturing operations. These success-
ful safety initiatives have reduced the
Flowserve lost-time accident rate to about one
lost-time incident per 1 million hours worked.
Five VMA Members Win 2010 Flow
Control Innovation Awards
Products manufactured by members of VMA
were honored in all three categories of Flow
Control’s 2010 Innovation Awards. Cameron
Measurement Systems and Emerson Process
Management won in the Measurement catego-
ry; ASCO Valve in the Control category; and
Flowserve and Garlock Sealing Technologies
were recognized in the Containment category.
Richards Industries Awarded for
Excellence in Exporting
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Ohio
Department of Development Director Lisa
Patt-McDaniel recently honored 20 businesses
and organizations with the Governor’s Excel-
lence in Exporting Award, including VMA
member Richards Industries. Since 1986, the
awards have been given to companies and
organizations that have shown superior per-
formance in exporting or heightened aware-
ness of exporting as a vital component of
Ohio’s economy.

Crane’s Max Mitchell
Elected VMA Chairman
The VMA board welcomed new officers,
and a new board member, at the 2010
VMA/VRC Annual Meeting, held Oct. 2
in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. Max Mitchell,
group president for Crane Fluid
Handling, took over the chairman’s role
from Mike Mason, executive vice
president of Emerson Process
Management – Fisher (see
"Conversation with..." on page 52, to
learn more about Mitchell).
In addition, Bruce Broxterman, president of Richards Industries,
became vice chairman; Mark Cordell, Cameron Valve & Measurement,
was approved as program chair; and Mike Mason’s role became past
chairman.
VMA also welcomed its first woman to the board—Sheri Roberts-Updike, president of Tyco Valves & Controls and vice president, global
oil and gas, Tyco Flow Control. Roberts-Updike replaced Rick
Lundgren, who stepped down after moving to another position at Tyco.
Roberts-Updike was appointed to her current position in May 2010.
Before that, she served in a variety of progressively responsible
positions throughout the world. Prior to working with Tyco, she was in
charge of the Ethylene Glycol and Ethylene Oxide businesses for Shell
Chemicals LP in North and South America.
